Iconic Money Tree Reopens
Landmark sculpture returns

Greenfield, MA - Greenfield Savings Bank is pleased to announce the reopening of its Money Tree Interactive Teller Machine (ITM) at 235 Mohawk Trail in Greenfield. Following nearly a year of restoration and infrastructure upgrades, the well-known sculpture has been fully refurbished and now features a state-of-the-art ITM adjacent to the tree.
Installed in 2008, the Money Tree was originally designed to combine functional banking with public art. Sculpted by local artist Thor Holbek using his own distinctive blend of fiberglass, cement, and other materials, the 25-foot-tall tree housed a drive-up ATM and quickly became a recognizable feature in the region—celebrated by customers and admired by visitors.
In December 2024, the ATM was damaged during a theft, prompting a comprehensive review of the site’s security and functionality. Greenfield Savings Bank responded by investing in a modern ITM that offers live teller support, improved accessibility, and enhanced security. Due to updated equipment specifications, the new ITM could not be housed within the original tree structure.
To preserve the landmark, the bank collaborated with Holbek to redesign the sculpture. The tree now features a decorative, non-working door where the ATM once stood, along with refreshed paint, upgraded lighting, and new landscaping to improve visibility and safety.
“The Money Tree has become an iconic part of Greenfield—a symbol of local pride and creativity,” said Tom Meshako, President of Greenfield Savings Bank. “It’s a familiar landmark in our community, now updated to better serve our customers with greater security and accessibility.”
The new ITM offers live teller support, inclusive design features, and advanced security measures including surveillance, tamper detection, and remote monitoring.
“We’ve taken every measure to ensure that this landmark is not only beautiful, but also secure,” said Jim Loynd, VP of Security at Greenfield Savings Bank.
The ITM is now fully operational and Greenfield Savings Bank encourages the community to visit the site and experience the updated services and revitalized local landmark.
